Lumber River (Overnight)
Update: The Lumber River Overnight Trip plan has been revised to change the put-in location to be Boardman, N.C., and the take-out location will be Fair Bluff, N.C. We will be camping at the Lumber River State Park, which is about half way down this river section. These changes are required, due to flood conditions on the lower river section. We still plan to meet in Fair Bluff at the original scheduled time of 11:00am on Saturday morning, and we will still paddle around 20 total river miles. Any questions can be forwarded to Trip Coordinator Bruce Monson.
We're planning a trip on the beautiful, black water Lumber River, leaving from Fair Bluff, NC, traveling across the border on the river into SC and taking out at the landing near Nichols, SC, about 18 river miles. This is a great trip for all types of boats and skill levels. The river is black water with (usually) moderate current and no expected pull-overs. It is reminiscent of the North Fork Edisto without the strainers. Hope to be able to find a nice sandbar for camping. It is wilderness camping , so plan to carry any gear, food & water that you will need for the overnight. (Suggested overnight gear list available for those that would like to have it.) We'll meet at the Fair Bluff landing about 11:00 am, run a shuttle and then be on the water by noon. It is about 120 miles from Columbia to Fair Bluff, so if there is expressed interest in either caravanning or pooling vehicles, then we can make plans. It will be a lazy float down the river until we come to the perfect camping spot for the night. We'll plan to paddle out to Nichols in the morning, getting to the landing around 1:00 or 2 :00 pm on Sunday. There are trip descriptions and slide shows from previous trips on the website. Check them out. We've had some really good trips on this river and some good stories to tell, so think about joining us for the fun of it!
